West Windsor-Plainsboro Girl Scouts Share Friendship Via 1000 Origami Cranes
West Windsor, New Jersey- March 23, 2011 Girl Scouts in this Central New Jersey community are responding to their concern for the Japanese people affected by the tsunami, earthquakes and nuclear reactor crises by leading an effort to fold 1,000 Origami (folded paper) cranes at the Market Fair Mall this weekend.
In response to requests from Girl Scouts across the country who want to help the people of Japan, GSUSA has created a special website Girl Scouts of Japan Relief Efforts. Scouts are also encouraged to fold the Origami cranes as a gesture of friendship and concern. In 2001, Girl Scouts in Japan sent thousands of the “Senbazuru” Origami cranes to the United States after the September 11 tragedy.
The tradition of giving the Origami gifts dates back to an ancient legend that promises a wish be granted by a crane to anyone who folds 1,000 paper cranes. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thousand_origami_cranes. Americans were introduced to the tradition by the non-fiction children’s book, Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes, written by Eleanor Coerr http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sadako_and_the_Thousand_Paper_Cranes.
The Girl Scouts of West Windsor-Plainsboro invite the public to stop by to help fold the Origami cranes or to make a contribution to the Girl Scout Relief Fund during regular Market Fair Mall hours on Saturday and Sunday, March 26 & 27.
